Turners Select Spindle Adapter Review

I found myself needing/wanting to use my baby Nova G3 chuck on Big Blue, mainly because I prefer using my big lathe instead of my 1950s craftsman.  So I ordered the turners select spindle adapter for $21.95 from Craft Supplies USA.  

As soon as the shipment arrived, I threw it on the lathe to try out my new toy.  Unfortunately, it didnt fit...  I was rather surprised to find that the thread relief (section that goes over smooth section of lathe spindle) was too small.  The adapter would not fully seat on the lathe spindle.  This greatly reduces the odds of the adapter running true, and could damage the spindle if you were to use the adapter and experience a catch while turning.  Not a gamble I wanted to take.

I called Craft Supplies USA to inquire about the dimensions of this adapter and explained my situation. The rep was very helpful and informed me that these spindle adapters are an exact copy of the Vicmarc adapters and that the thread relief should fit all wood lathes.  He also confirmed that my adapter was not inconsistent with others they have in stock.

I find it interesting that there wouldnt be more clearance in the thread relief area, but it looks like theres not too much I can do unless I want to pay double and chance that the Vicmarc adapter would work.  I thanked the man for his time and went to the machine shop.  A friend of mine was happy to open up the problem area to 1.505" which fixed the problem and gives me a spindle adapter that will actually work!

My overall opinion of this product is this:

I think for the price, its a good item.  Once I had my issue fixed, it hasnt offered to give me any trouble.  The adapter runs true on my lathe and works just fine.  

That being said, there really isnt any reason to not open up the thread relief on these items. Removing even .01" (double what I removed from mine) isnt going to compromise the strength of the part and it will greatly increase compatibility.  

If I had to do it all over again, Id probably still buy the same adapter and modify it as needed.  Id be in a real mess though without a machine shop to work with.

Thompson Turning Tools Up for Review

Over the years of exploring wood turning forums, a name began appearing, Thompson Lathe Tools.  

You know how it goes, you see a reference of a new tool and think "Huh, wonder if its any good?"  After seeing this brand pop up more and more, I visited his website and took a look around.  I realized that Id been missing out.  Id read others rave about the extreme edge holding ability of these tools, but I didnt realize that a lot of the professionals that make a living by turning more and sharpening less were using these tools too.  Thats when I told myself that when I could, I was going to check out these tools for myself.

I still had a few questions before my decision to purchase was set.  

Such as: 
Do I have to have a CBN wheel for sharpening these tools? 
Which 3/8" spindle gouge with a fingernail grind is used for small finial work?
Whats the advantage of the U shaped or V shaped bowl gouge?
Ill be turning some large platters.  What scraper would you recommend for cleaning up the inside?

I called the company owner, Doug, on a Friday at a quarter to five and had to leave a message.  I figured he was doing the same thing I was and had called it an early day.  To my surprise he called back that evening around 6 and answered all of my questions and then some.  He said that sure, some people use CBN, but you dont have to.  Youll get a finer edge with a CBN wheel, but that the edge created by a 80 or 120 grit aluminum oxide wheel will serve you just fine.  Doug recommended his regular spindle gouge with a sharp fingernail grind for creating delicate finials.  He also recommended the V shaped bowl gouge for the large pieces I was planning to make.  The V shaped bowl gouge is a bit more stout than the U shaped and has proven to be an excellent choice.  I also have a fingernail grind on this tool and have enjoyed every minute of it.  We discussed the advantages and disadvantages of the three larger sized scrapers that Doug offers for some time and decided on the 1 1/4" scraper. This size is large enough to reach a fair amount over the tool rest and flatten a big platter, but not so big that I cant use it for 5" plates or bowls.  

After mulling it over for a while, I purchased the 5/8 V shaped bowl gouge, the 3/8 spindle gouge, and the 1 1/4" scraper.  Upon the arrival of these tools, I was quickly impressed.  I feel that packaging says a lot about a person, and while this has nothing to do with edge holding ability, it does enforce the message that Thompson Lathe Tools sends.  These tools are of utmost quality and pride is reflected by each item being shipped in sturdy plastic tubes or sleeves.  Of all the tools Ive purchased, these are the most sturdy.  Even before placing these tools in handles, they just have more presence than any other gouge or scraper Ive handled.  The bowl gouge and spindle gouge both have a heavier cross section than my other gouges, which makes them incredibly sturdy and resistant to chatter.  I cant say enough about the 1 1/4" scraper though.  Wow, just wow.  Its made from 5/16" thick stock and doesnt even attempt to fuss when youre cleaning up the bottom of a big platter or bowl.  It should be noted that this isnt the heaviest scraper that Doug carries.  The two larger scrapers are made of 3/8" and 5/8" steel.  WHAT?!  

Doug Thompson sells his tools unhandled, which keeps costs down.  If youre a do it yourself kinda guy like I am, you can make your own handles and save some cash.  However, what if youre too excited about trying out your new toys?  Cough cough.  Sorry, tools.  You can purchase interchangeable handles from Doug as well.

So, I quickly made some metal handles to try out my new gouge.  The first victim that fell prey to this awesome 5/8" gouge was a piece of hickory that was 21" X 4".  I was absolutely amazed with the results.  I had to sharpen my gouge once after starting this piece and had never had so much fun burying myself with shavings.  I was floored with the edge holding ability of this tool and knew that the other tools were sure to be just as amazing.

About a month later, it was time to get started making ornaments.  I pulled out my new 3/8" spindle gouge and went to town making finials.  This tool has great control and quickly felt like an extension of my body to shape wood with ease.  Again, I was impressed with this tools ability to retain a sharp cutting edge.  Making small finials requires a lot of repeated cuts with the 1/8" tip of a fingernail ground spindle gouge.  I could complete numerous finials per sharpening before performance was even noticeably compromised.

Like most scrapers, these are equipped with a rectangular tang.  For this tool, I made a wooden handle and enlisted the tool for active duty.  Anyone who has used a scraper knows that the heart and soul of a scrapers viability is the burr that creates the cutting edge.  With my standard M2 HSS scraper, I was constantly going back and forth to the grinder or burnishing the edge to bring the burr back to life.  Ill never go back!  You cant make me use an M2 scraper.  Maybe Im over reacting, but geez, this thing just keeps going.  Now, youre not going to see that same time interval as you would with a gouge, but its a scraper, people, and the Thompson scrapers are the ones you want next to your lathe.

Thompson Lathe Tools doesnt just provide tools, they provide satisfaction and excitement.  These tools are just fun to use.  They respond as expected and seem to become an extension of your body that acts and responds instinctively.  Doug is a great person to do business with and I will happily continue to support him with future business and reviews.

Work Bench Storage Hack Keeping Sanding Blocks Out of Sight But Close at Hand

How many of you never seem to have enough storage space in your shop?  In this post, Ill describe how I utilized wasted space on my workbench.

Eventually, I plan to add cabinets and drawers under my workbench.  However, when I do, Ill lose about a 6" tall storage space because of the apron on my bench.  I hate wasting space, and would love nothing more than to have a home for every tool and gadget in my shop.

Sadly, it took me a while for this idea to hit me, but when it did, I felt like a load of bricks had just been dropped on my head!  At times I feel like I have as many sanding blocks as a teenage girl has shoes.  Storing them in a useful way has always been a quandary until now.  

For my biggest sanding blocks with handles, I drilled corresponding holes in the apron of my workbench.  I used a spade bit that is 1/8" larger than the size of my handles.  The sanding blocks are easily removed and stored.  The larger sized hole also allows for less than perfect positioning while drilling the holes into the work bench.  I put storage locations on three sides of the bench for my large sanding blocks.

Spur Drive Options and Review

I know what youre thinking.  Really?  A review about a spur drive?  Come on, you are seriously low on content pal.  Actually no, Id like to pass along some information thats kinda the point of my blog.  A month of Sundays ago, I was on the prowl for a #3 MT spur drive.  There are lots of options and I finally found the one I wanted.  Hooked yet?

First off, in the land of wood lathes, a #3 MT is almost an anomaly.  Not many companies offer this size, so just finding one option is a touch daunting.

I wanted a spur drive so that I could reposition a piece for optimal grain characteristics during the roughing out phase of creating a bowl or hollow form.  Also, for plates, its nice to have the option of not having to grab the drill to attach a face plate or screw chuck.

So, lets see who the candidates were.

The first option that I found was the Sorby Stebcentre at Grizzly.  In hind sight, maybe I should have gone with this item for simplicity, but my concern was mainly from what Ive read about these being used for bowls.  From my research, these stebcentres are great, but are intended for endgrain work and not driving a bowl.  This does make sense to me due to the design of the teeth on this drive.  So, maybe it would have worked just as well as what Im using now, but I passed on this one due to information Id read from other users of stebcentres.  Regardless, this center has a spring loaded center which allows one to load and unload pieces from the lathe while the machine is running.  The piece simply stops turning as you reduce the pressure against the drive.  These are about $70 through Grizzly.  With this being the first item that I found, I simple wanted to keep looking.

Second we have a slightly different approach with drives that Best Wood Tools offers.  After finding the previous option, I was stuck for a while until stumbling across Best Wood Tools option of a thread on drive.  There reasoning for a threaded drive instead of the traditional MT is that (and Im paraphrasing) "with a taper, the drive can/will slip under heavy loads."  Now I understand what youre getting at, but Im not convinced.  If slippage was that much of a concern, I dont think the MT would be the standard for drill presses, metal lathes, or the wide variety of other machines that have used taper fits since the dawn of time.  Personally Ive never had a MT drive slip in any spindle (even a #1 MT), but if you want a fool proof, never gonna slip on the spindle approach, then a threaded drive will certainly do the trick.

The downside of having a 1 1/2 x 8 spindle on your lathe is that you either have to use a spindle adapter or search and search for tooling to fit your lathe.  This would have been the path I took without a doubt until I saw the price of the bad boys.  Ouch!  Before I get too carried away, let me tell you a bit about Best Wood Tools approach.  First, they make their drives modular.  This means you can buy the spindle adapter with a drive insert, and then just buy the different drive inserts as you need them.  These drives are indeed Texas sized.  The body of the drive is 2" in diameter and the drive area measures 1 1/2" across.  Thats some serious real estate.  They sure look like a great product, and I get that theyre made by a relatively small shop, but I couldnt shell out $100 for my spur drive and then another $50 for additional inserts if I needed them.

And third is the Axminster Jumbo Spur Drive.  This spur drive comes in either #2 MT or #3 MT.  Im not sure what type of steel it is made of.  I had originally thought it may have been electropolished or chrome plated because the drive is quite shinny.  Who doesnt like shiny?  I mean, come on people.  Anyways, the drive has begun to tarnish a bit on the drive teeth after turning a slew of wet woods.  I didnt notice any tarnishing until I turned some wet oak, which rusted my lathe bed too!  I will say that the metal seems to be quite soft.  Id prefer this than for it to be hardened and damage the taper in my spindle, but the back has taken dents quite readily from seating the drive.  I also knocked the drive out of the spindle one day too vigorously, which caused it to fall onto the lathe bed and dented the drive teeth rather deeply.  However, even with all of this said, Im still rather happy with the drive center and for £17 ($28.61) you really cant beat the price.  Even after shipping across the pond, I came out ahead price wise.

Before I decided on the spur drive from Axminster, I called Serious Toolworks Inc.  To say that they build a hefty lathe would be an understatement.  Ive not had the pleasure of test driving one of these beasts but would jump at the opportunity.  I do in fact like be heavy manly tools if you cant tell.  When I contacted Serious Toolworks they were in the middle or relocating and Scott told me that it would be a while before he would be able to send out a spur drive.  

The good news is that if youre in the same boat as I am, there are options for your #3 MT or 1 1/2x8 spindles.  Happy hunting!

Teds WoodWorking Review An Honest Customer Opinion

I was at first very skeptical of Teds Woodworking but then I changed my mind.
Heres why.

My name is Ryan Riley and I am a woodwork hobbyist, just like you, and I spend some time on the internet every week reading up on my favorite hobby.
Over the past few months I have been constantly bombarded with ads which promote downloadable woodworking plans.  I was very attracted to the plans on offer as I find the hardest and most time consuming part of  my woodworking is the actual design stage of my projects.  I much prefer the "hands-on" stuff.  So at first, I was very excited by, but at the same time very skeptical about what these ads were offering. But in the end curiosity got the better of me and I decided that I would purchase these plans so that I could delve in and see what all the fuss was about.  One of the sets of wood project plans was from  a woodworker named Ted McGrath. And on his website he promised me 16,000 woodworking project plans and some bonuses.  Now after a bit of online searching I had heard quite a lot of bad things about Teds woodworking and was a bit apprehensive about buying.  The offer seemed a bit too good to be true but the way I was going to find out was, of course, to purchase them.  Which I did. I havent looked back since.

The video below will show you what you will get when you purchase Teds woodworking plans.  I go through each aspect of the product and give you my honest opinion.   I am very thorough with my analysis so if you do not have 45 minutes to spare then please enjoy my written review which is beneath the video.



I went and bought the deluxe version of Teds woodworking plans ($67) and although the product did have some downfalls I was largely pleased with the quality of the product and also of the bonuses that were delivered.  
Below is my personal review.  I hope this review will help you come to a decision as to whether buying these woodwork plans is right for you and your woodworking hobby.

Introduction

If you have looked at the Ted’s woodworking website and are considering purchasing Ted’s woodworking plans then please read this review before you purchase.  I have purchased the deluxe plans package and I will provide you with what I think is an accurate description and personal opinion of the product offered by Ted McGrath.  I also have created a video, just for visitors of this blog, where I show you exactly what lies in wait for you after you make the plunge and purchase Ted’s Wood Working.

First of all, I would like to say I was pleased overall with the quality of the plans provided by Ted McGrath.  All the plans were well detailed although some were more detailed than others.  But at least each plan was complete.
Most of the bonuses were good but some of the bonuses I felt weren’t quite up to scratch.  I will go through them one by one towards the end of this blog post.
When you fill in your billing details located here you will be then issued a membership number and a password login which brings you into a section of Teds website where you can access all the plans.  Ted then offers you to upgrade to the "Deluxe Edition" (for an extra $37).  The "Deluxe Edition" is basically some extra plans and software.  


Ted also offers you the opportunity to purchase a DVD which contains all the plans available in the members area.  The DVD costs an extra $20 (inclusive of worldwide shipping) but if you do not feel like manually downloading all the plans (which does take quite a bit of time :/) this might be the option for you.  I didnt bother though.

Break Down of the bonuses

Ted’s Bonus #1 DWG/CAD Software

Basically this software that allows you to view and edit CAD files.  It is quite good and if you have experience with software and you are kind of technically savvy then you will not have any problem using this software.  Although I feel that a lot of folks may have difficulty using the software which is why I have created a special bonus for you guys if you visit Ted’s website via any link on this page and make your purchase.  I will them email you the videos and ebook.  Only visitors of this blog can avail of this unique opportunity.

The videos collection is quite a handy resource which does provide many “how to” woodworking videos.  I think the majority of these videos are hosted on YouTube and other video sharing websites.  So these are already available on the web!  I have not watched each individual video but the ones I have seen are good, packed with lots of tips, and I guess it is handy to have them all located in the same place.  The videos are organized in order of the type of wooden object being made in the video e.g. cabinets, bookcases, tables etc.

Ted’s Bonus #3 How to Start a Woodworking Business

This 20 page e-book does contain good information but at the same time it is kind of common sense knowledge that most people would know already.  The book goes through the main areas needed to start a woodworking business like tools needed, where to find places to sell your self-made items, how to evaluate your competitors and how you can get them to work with you. The concluding chapter of the book discusses some other important factors you may need to consider when staring up a wood working business.

To be honest I think the book was thrown together at the last minute and even though the information in the book is good I think Ted could have provided more information and more resources.  Information concerning the legal obligations of the woodworker who wishes to sell his products should have been covered and also maybe things like the tax information.  It does tell you about business licenses but just tells you that you need one, lol.

I would give this bonus 2 out of 5.

Ted’s Bonus #4 Complete Woodworking Guides

This bonus is a series of ebooks which gives you tips and advice on how to work well with wood.  Some of the topics covered include sawing techniques and how to finish your wooden projects i.e. what finishes are suitable for what kind of finishes are suitable for different projects.

How to Start a Woodworking Business

If you have ever wondered how to start a woodworking business, then this is article is going to help you do that. Woodworking is a craft that can see you earn a decent second income. Wood is abundant, readily available and a very versatile material that is very often used to make items of furniture. The thing is that you often know a lot more than the average folks when it comes to woodworking. There is probably a lot of information and know-how that you take for granted. What seems easy for you may seem very difficult for other people and here lies a serious money making opportunity. There are people who love woodworking, but just do it as a hobby and thats fine. A good set of tools is essential. You can borrow or buy these but you may want to shop around and check the classified newspapers or the online classifieds e.g. craigslist.org. I am sure that there are lots of people advertising their tools for pennies on the dollar. The kind of tools that you will need for your projects will depend on the nature of your business. If you want to start selling small items e.g. tables, chairs and/or toys, then having simple hand tools may prove to be adequate. Larger projects may need bigger tools.

You will at least need the following tools:

1. Carpenters pencil
2. Tape measure
3. Stanley knife
4. Saw
5. Hammer
6. An assortment of nails/screws.
7. Tri-square
8. Sandpaper
9. Small plane
10. Assortment of screw drivers (phillips & flat)

Craigslist.org, as I have mentioned before, is one of the biggest websites of its kind and theres plenty of people offering their tools for sale and sometimes for free.  It is most popular in the USA where there are sections for every state.  If you live in America this will be a very useful resource if you need to find tools & even wood for your woodworking business.

You need to have clearly marked out your niche. Woodworking is a broad subject that can see you produce anything from a simple birdhouse all the way to production of office and home furniture. You need to copyright your products to avoid cases where people can steal your ideas for their own benefit.

Make sure you advertise. Again the classifieds can be a huge source of revenue for you that is if you dont want to make your own website. Ebay has been around for about 15 years and is still going strong. Which just proves that people buy stuff from one another over the internet and are completely comfortable doing so. There are many ways that you can advertise your products. You can use the internet. Using the internet will need you to put up a website. You can have a variety of sample pictures on the website. You also need to know all the ways of putting up a good website if you want to get enough traffic. You need to use the internet to not only advertise, but also to sell. With the website you will be able to tap into potential markets that cuts across country boundaries.

2. Woodworking Plans

The amount of money you make from your woodworking will be directly proportional to the ease and speed at which you build your projects.  This being said the fastest way to get building your projects will be if you have the plans already.  Plans have been carefully thought out and I do recommend that you purchase a good set of plans.  Trying to design your own projects is only going to cost you lots of time and there is no point in reinventing the wheel.

4. Wood

Wood can be sourced from numerous places.  Even scrap wood can be cleaned up and turned into beautiful woodworking project.  Stripping down old pallets can be a useful source of wood and nearly every business in town will have some that they were going to throw out anyway. Again check Craigslist.org!

3. A Workshop

It would be great if you could have the use of a big workshop full of the latest machinery and tonnes of wood.  This may not be a realistic option for you but all really need is a workbench and an empty room in your house.  If you live in a dry region then you may even prefer to build your woodworking projects outdoors.  You will probably need a clamp on your bench.

4. An Advertising Stream

This can be as easy as telling your friends that you have stuff for sale.  Other methods will include posting adverts on classifieds (online and offline).  Below is a list of classified type websites that will help get you started on making decent income from your woodworking.

Making your own website
If you plan on making a catalogue of items and let your customers browse your website for items to buy then you may easily do this.  There are many great resources out there to help you start your own ecommerce store.  To start a website you basically need a domain name and some hosting.  The domain name is basically the .com or the .dot org name.  Your website will need hosting to store all the files that your website contains, for example the pictures of your woodworking projects and the text of your site.  As long as the woodworking business owner can commit to delivering the goods everything else is easily done even if you dont have good web technology skills.  Tip: if you sign up with bluehost for your website hosting then you get a free domain.

Woodworking ideas
There is no end to the range and scope of woodworking business opportunities.  There are literally thousands of items you could build and sell.  So the name of the game here is to build quickly and cheaply any woodworking item that has a high value.  The more valuable people see the item the more you can charge.  I will go into more detail with this later on in this series of woodworking business startup blog posts.

Chip N Dip On The Way!

Its been quite a while since Ive turned a chip-n-dip platter, so its good to be making one again.  This is a beautiful piece of ambrosia maple with some lovely birdseye and lots of character.  Ive rough turned the piece and its now soaking in a denatured alcohol bath.  Ill be fitting it with a little glass bowl so that your favorite salsa or dip of choice wont stain the wood.  Only four weeks till its dry enough to finish.  I cant wait!
