david smith at the clark

sam and i checked out the new david smith exhibit at the new clark art museum last week.  check out that first link for many images from the remodeled museum .. the clark has been closed for about 2 years and just reopened on  july 4th  .. sam and i went to the guggenheim exhibit back in 2006, which was a tour de force of the smiths incredible output of amazing steel work.  heres a link to images online from that show  he filled the whole main spiral and several side rooms .. an amazing show .. even the catalog was a whopper.  ive got it out again for a review and its a great one ... the catalog is still available, but hang on to your checkbook ..

in my computer.  i think that is australia behind us ... 

it was crazy crowded for a thursday morning at the clark, but we got to see what we went to see and it was all very inspirational

they are big

and they are colorful

and they are well thought out ... in the exhibit, they are set up exactly as 

mr smith had them set up in his meadow at bolton landing.

there were also a few other pieces with a circle theme

and a few of his large, interesting, spray over arranged objectscanvases.

they are all good in their own way ..

and the main collection was intact and only slightly rearranged.  above is the famous alma tadema designed steinway that took a lot of people a long time to create in 2005, 500,000 pianos after steinway made the original in 1887.

but the approach and the reflecting pools are quite striking ..

In case you havent noticed, most of the custom work Ive been doing lately is for the rad people at Yeah! Rentals.  I love working with them.  Their event styling is top-notch, theyve got great style and theyre just rad in general.  They asked me to create some folding dining tables and heres what we came up with.  The u-shaped metal legs fold inward and strap to the table with leather + brass straps made by my buddy Jesse at Union Leatherworks.  Love these tables?  Rent them for your wedding, party or any other event at Yeah! what kind of custom dining tables do you make

someone, i forget who, asked me over the holidays, so what type of furniture do you make most often?  my answer was dining tables.  a lot of our projects take longer and require a lot more concentration, organization and problem solving, but im fairly confidant if you asked my guys what their favorite type of project was, youd get the same answer.  dining tables.  one of the reasons may be is the flow of them.  you start. not that long later, you finish.  they leave. you know people will have good times around them ...next project ...

  how many different tables have we made over the last 34 years?  more than a hundred for sure.  i put this slide show together as much for my own convenience, so i can find a picture of a table that is not on my website when i want it, and also so folks can see the different styles we work in.  this is certainly not all of the tables we have made, but it does cover some stylistic ground, from high traditional, to contemporary slabs.  click any photo at the link above to start the show, and enjoy your tour.  a few of the highlights are directly below.

a round expanding dining table with a leaf

the black walnut tables roll on ... i think this is our 4th or 5th in the last
couple years.  this one is a variation on our midcentury modern style, only with a more open,
stationary pedestal, rather than a two part moving one in the photo below.

 

we made this design in july of 2014

of the same genre, there is also this design, from march of 2014. 

as usual, we started with some nice matched walnut from our friends at irion lumber.

both the earlier and the current cad drawings here

the equalizing runners we used on this table were from osburne manufacturing

base with the sub top, on which the runners are mounted.  

patchwork veneered top frame for the python chest on the sub top there.

trevor cut the halves, the base pieces and the aprons on the cnc, but
all those processes could be just as easily done by hand .. it might take much longer,
but the operations are standard for most woodshops.

heres trevor checking the runner mounting.  this hardware actually worked very smoothly.

ready for finish above, with one 20" leaf.  add the adam brown mahogany water stain and

a three coats of lenmar poly, and it left for virginia on tuesday.

new van !!

i drove my faithful 2006 town and country 15 miles up the road today to zappones chrysler dodge dealers in granville, new york for its last ride.  with me, anyway.  its certainly still got some good miles in it, but im going to let someone else enjoy them .. i bought it in october of 2006.  it needs a little work now, but it still has its original shocks and muffler after 97,000 miles.  its been a faithful, low cost, reliable and comfortable companion, and i actually felt a little sad going up the valley this afternoon.  this is my fourth, no 5th, soccer mom mobile, (87,94,2002,2006,2014), and you just cant beat them for hauling stuff around under cover ... plus its a smooth and quiet car like ride.  good luck old friend.

 

 i think ill get over it pretty quickly .. the new one has that new car smell, the CLEAN windows and seats, the spiffy new sound system controls on the the steering wheel, and some other stuff i dont know
how to work yet, like the connectivity whatever that is ... on we go ..
