a fun and challenging repair

well, we had a couple chuckles today .. we finished this repair and i was taking a quick record photo and caught jim in the dollar bill pose.  lookin good in there, dont ya think?  anyway, the orange lines in the photo denote all the places this piece was broken when we picked it up .. it is a family heirloom that was standing quietly in the owners garage just after arrival, when the arm thing on the top of the automatic garage door just nicked the top and tipped it over on its face as it was closing.  small disaster .. all better now.  click the photos to enlarge them ..

it took a few clamps and a bit of fussy work to get everything lined back up and reglued.  it also required some imaginative clamping fixtures due to all the holes and rounded edges ... we got it though and it looks good as new for an antique.  these things must have been really popular at one time cause there are about a million different pictures of em on google images.  check it out

seriously, a half million at least ..

it even had a pair of sweet cast bronze, mirror image scallop shells for the base .. very cool ..

more new projects

 following up on some stuff from the previous post, and getting some other new projects underway.  happy to clear the decks a bit and make room for some new stuff.  we hung the big mirror yesterday, all 13 5" of it.  it was interesting as the building is old, the floor and ceiling or both out of level and when we hung it up level, it was just so obviously wrong that we had to move it around until it looked right with everything else that is going on there.  as it hangs now, the right end is about 7/8ths higher than the left end but it totally looks right given the other stuff that is going on .. havent had to do that for a while.  click the pictures to enlarge them ...

 

 and the cherry bookcase clients will be in town this weekend ... that piece will be 

joining its friends that we made previously ...

 and the dart cabinet is happening now ... it can be fun working with crooked old barn boards.

 you certainly cant be fussy, and you definitely have to go with the flow.

 and its been a good excuse to have a dartboard next to the chop saw for a while.

recipe for a railng .. cut a bunch of steel up into very specific lengths, and weld it all together,  

then take it to the clients house and bolt it to the posts you put there last week ..

 looks easy when its done ...  

 

and sams got a couple other table bases in the works.  the one above will have a danby marble top.  thats 1" rebar .. polished .. its a nice look and the rebar is becoming popular with our customers .. 

 

 and another nakashima style base 
hes just making the base.  the client is making his own top.

and theres a new claro walnut table happening too ...  4 x 8 x 2.75" thick, with a 

beefed up steel base to go with the beefier slab.  its gonna look good.  weve done a 

heavier base before in 1.75" steel, but this looks fine in our regular 1.5" steel.

the price of steel has increased so much lately that its hard to justify working in the thicker stuff.

 

 the slab had a few surface, non structural, cracks that we filled with our usual advantech tintable epoxy.

  

chris finished the chest of drawers for the shaker piece .. we may install that tomorrow.

and trevors underway on a new 60" round walnut table with a 22" crotch walnut inlay in the center of it.

whats happening now

we could be setting the record here these days with stuff going on at the same time 

right before the holidays at dorset custom furniture this month.

started a couple weeks ago with this railing from sams shop

and a stand for a 1953 packard hood ornament

and a maple leaf belt buckle .. first one of these i think ...

 and then these last week

 

and this one cemented in place, just before the snow ...

 

the terrain and the recent crushed stone fill around the new stairs made

this one a challenge.

and then, the snow

and the new railings at the dorset field club

still more to go there with railings at each set of stairs

and wills been busy .. here he is modeling a goatskin necklace, the trimming from 

a natural skin head installed on a recent banjo he finished.

and ive finished some new pottery, just in time to give it away for christmas ...

and while it may not look it, this was a challenging redo, given the existing tile,

slightly out of plumb walls, and complex existing infrastructure under the old vanity.

after

and trevors got a 42" round table with 4 -20" leaves

 home stretch; ready for light stain with black details soon ..

 and at the very last minute, a client weve been working with since may added these counters to the mix.  this one is 28" wide by 128" long by 350 pounds or so.

 this one is 5 x 6 feet by about 350 pounds or so too

 

 and this rather substantial claro walnut slab arrived last week from good hope hardwoods ..

63" at the wide end; 13 long; 3" thick in the rough ..

 trimmed er down a little at the local jk adams factory where we had it delivered

(they have a forklift)

 great figure !!!!!

 trimmed and in the truck.... now in the shop .. in the on deck circle for next year

and jim just sanded and reoiled a set of six of these outdoor chairs ... 

ugh! .. he was glad to deliver them back to the client

and the last two pre-christmas projects that should be finished at the end of the day today ..

above another x based table from reclaimed barn parts; last coat of finish today

 

and this custom cue rack ... finished now, and ill install it this morning

and on christmas eve, a last minute gift certificate for a slab top coffee table .. 

im sure it was a hit with the clients wife on christmas morning
